Book Goodies: Author Interview with John Graves

An Interview with John Graves

Tell us a little about yourself.

I have traveled extensively, with more than 80 countries’ stamps in my passport. My avocation is adventure. I have sailed to Hawaii several times as well as across the Atlantic and throughout the Mediterranean and Caribbean. I have also trekked the Andes, the Sahara, the Taklamakan, the Serengeti, and the Namib. In my previous career, I was a chef.

What inspires you to write?

I have always wondered about the various solutions to the overpopulation crisis, the climate change crisis. Do these intelligentsia actually want to destroy humanity?

Death by Design is a thriller about how the intelligentsia’s final solution might work. Let’s hope they are wrong – Tracker is too powerful for any of them!

Tell us about your writing process.

Nonfiction is all about the facts; thus, I outline the research, organize it, and then write it.

Fiction is different: the story wrote itself, or rather, Tracker dictated it to me.

For Fiction Writers: Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?

Tracker has dictated most of the book: more than 60%. I listen; she writes. Quite amazing actually. She is my mini-me. The rest is from research on pandemics and the response from the CDC.

What advice would you give other writers?

Persistence is the master stroke of success. Write every day, as you would exercise, eat or sleep. Make it an integral part of your life style.

How did you decide how to publish your books?

Self-publishing requires more effort. You must think as a business owner, which I am. Publishers give the appearance to me of sharks eating entrails from bloodied waters. Doing it yourself makes more economic sense – if you have the drive.

What do you think about the future of book publishing?

Amazon dictates, the industry responds. It has become a dichotomous, treacherous dance macabre.

What genres do you write?

I write both nonfiction and fiction (thrillers).

What formats are your books in?

Both ebook and print. I’ll soon have an audio edition as well.

What is your website?
